Locking the Doors
Volvo's remote keyfobs can unlock your vehicle's doors, tailgate and fuel filler flap with the push of one button. They can also turn on the ignition, set the alarm, and operate your sunroof if equipped. It's no longer necessary to search for your keys or have to worry about locking out of your vehicle.
You may not be aware of some key fob features that aren't visible. One of these features is an unlocked/lock button that you can use in the event that the battery of your key fob fails.
To press the manual lock/unlock button to unlock your key fob, place it with the Volvo logo facing upwards. Find the black button that is located near the edges of the body of the key fob, and gently press it to unlock a cover that hides a manual key blade. You will require a flathead screwdriver, or a coin to flip this cover counterclockwise, ensuring that the arrow is aligned with "open."
Beginning the Engine
Modern Volvo key fobs offer an ease of use and functionality that is unmatched by traditional manual keys. But, just like any other battery-powered electronic device, a key fob can be depleted of its charge or cease working after a certain period of time. If you notice that your key fob is less responsive when you hit the lock or unlock button, it could be time to replace its battery.
You can activate this feature with the key fob if your car has a dealer installed Engine Remote Start. The car will be heated or cooled to the exact temperature it was set to when it was parked and it can run for up to 15 minutes.
Use a fingernail to remove the cover from the back of the key fob. Under the cover on a diagonal close to the body's edge you'll find the button. Slide it down and then to the right. The cover will then come loose and slide off, revealing the manual key blade inside! If you are still unable to locate the button, look around the newly revealed manual key access to find whether there is a hidden slot or lever.
Close the Windows
One of the nefarious features that is not visible on Volvo key fobs is that you are able to lower all windows immediately using them. This is very useful when you are trying to squeeze into parking spaces that are tight or just want to breathe fresh air while driving.
To unlock the windows simply press and hold the unlock button on your Volvo remote for four seconds. This will lower all the windows, as well as the sunroof if it has one. Once you're done with your car you can lock everything by pressing the lock button for four seconds.
You can also set off the panic alarm inside your car by using the key fob. This will emit an intense, attention-grabbing roar that will frighten off thieves and allow you to return home at a safe distance after a night out. This feature is great for those who live in a dangerous area, or want to keep your family safe when you are away from home.
Opening the Tailgate
Volvo has loaded its key fobs with number of useful features. These are perfect for when you're working on groceries or helping your kids to pack their sports gear following practice.
For instance, if you have the available Hands-Free Power Liftgate with logo projection and programmable height (if equipped), you can open it using the key fob. It is possible to open the liftgate by pressing the button, and then close it with the same button.

When you're ready to get your car started, use the key fob to push the START button (and don't fret about your battery failing or your car not starting because it comes with a backup mechanical key slot too). This is just one of the many useful tricks for your brand new Volvo.
Our Key Protection service can help to minimize the damage caused by losing your Volvo keys. It covers the cost of replacement or repair in the event that you lose your Volvo key fob, and also covers labor costs to help get back on the road.
Switching off the Alarm
Modern key fobs are more efficient than a traditional car key. They aren't always working perfectly and batteries may be dead. You can try programming your key fob at your home if you are in a rush or don't have time go to the shop.
Lay out your keys along with batteries and any other keys on a clean surface. Set the key fob with the Volvo logo facing upwards and then find a small black button at the left side of the fob and slide it downwards and to the right. The cover should fall off and reveal the key blade's mechanical structure underneath.
You can unlock all doors and the reargate by pressing the unlock button on the key fob two times. By pressing the lock button for 2 seconds, you can also close the sunroof and windows when they're equipped. Reconnect the battery and the alarm should stop. If it doesn't work, the owner's manual should contain a procedure to reset the system.
